Department Profile

The Department of Chemistry, Bishop Moore College was established in 1978 with the introduction of B.Sc Degree course in Chemistry. The Department was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department in 1995 with M.Sc Degree in Analytical Chemistry. In 2009, the Department was approved as a Research Centre by the University of Kerala. The Department has been upgraded as FIST supported Department in 2014 and as a DBT- STAR Department in 2017. The Department is equipped with nine competent, dedicated, and experienced faculty members. The Department exercises innovative teaching and learning methods. The Department has to its credit several University ranks for both BSc and MSc courses. The Department is subscribing to 12 research Journals to motivate the teachers and students for research and exposure. The Department has successfully completed major projects which were funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Kerala State Council of Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), UGC and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). The Department had collaborative projects with Universities in Germany (DST DAAD). Currently, the Department is having a collaborative project with Pushpagiri Research Centre for developing human milk-based fortifiers for preterm infants. The Department has published over 200 research papers published in international peer-reviewed journals, edited international books, and has three Indian patents to its credit. The Department provides in-house projects for PG and UG students and their project works have been published in high-impact international journals. Students from the department are motivated to take up summer training at the IITs, NITs, University Centres, etc. The Department regularly hosts International/National/State level conferences and workshops to provide opportunity for the students to meet stalwarts in different areas of science.
