One-day Workshop on “Role of IPR in Academia and Industry

he Department of Chemistry, Bishop Moore College, in collaboration with Intellectual Property Rights Information Centre (IPRIC-K), KSCSTE and Institution Innovation Council (IIC), organized a one-day Workshop on “Role of IPR in Academia and Industry)” on 15th July 2025 with the objective of creating awareness about the relevance and application of intellectual property in the academic and research landscape. The workshop began with a solemn prayer song , followed by the Welcome Address delivered by Dr. Deepa Thomas, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry. The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. Ranjith Mathew Abraham, Principal, Bishop Moore College, who also delivered the Presidential Address. In his speech, he highlighted the growing relevance of IPR in higher education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Felicitations were offered by Dr. Anne Angeline Abraham, Vice Principal and Dr. Tressia Alias Princy Paulose, IIC Coordinator. The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Siji K Mary, Head of the Department of Chemistry, acknowledging the presence and support of the dignitaries, faculty, resource persons, and participants.
The technical session began with a formal introduction by Dr. Rekha Rose Koshy, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.
The first part of the session titled “An Overview of Intellectual Property Rights” was delivered by Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan, Registrar, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. She highlighted the various forms of intellectual property, their importance in knowledge-based economies, and how academic institutions can play a crucial role in innovation protection.
This was followed by a talk on “Patentability of Inventions and Patent Filing Procedure” by Ms. Chaithanya P.C, Project Scientist-I, Patent Information Centre–Kerala, KSCSTE. She provided valuable insights into the practical aspects of filing patents in India, criteria for patentability, and available government support systems.
Dr. Priya Mary Abraham, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, introduced the second speaker. The workshop concluded with a feedback and interaction session, where participants actively engaged with the speakers, raising questions related to patent procedures, IP in academic projects, and innovation disclosure.
Overall, the workshop served as a significant platform to educate and inspire the academic community to understand, protect, and apply intellectual property rights in their research and innovation journey.
